In 2016 the John Lewis Foundation agreed to fund an Oxfam project entitled "Empowering Women and Building Sustainable Livelihoods in Urban Bangladesh". The project is located in communities where John Lewis suppliers are based and engages suppliers directly in helping to create a sustainable change for women in the supply chain. The project seeks to support 25,000 poor and marginalised women and girls from slum areas in which the John Lewis supplier base is directly located, to access market opportunities, be aware of their rights and challenge the attitudes that hinder their economic empowerment.
